Park View Community Mission
Park View Community Mission got its start in the basement of a church building that has a long history. It was originally constructed in 1857 on Church Street. In 1939, the building was purchased and relocated brick by brick to its current location. After River Ridge Mall was built in 1980, the economic center of Lynchburg shifted south to the Wards Road area. The property values in the midtown area began to decline while church membership was slowly dropping.
Still, the people of the church recognized that there was a need in the surrounding community. They began a Wednesday night dinner in 1996, with an open invitation to everyone. The mid-week meals program (which continues today as the Park View Cafe) expanded into food boxes for families in need.
The congregation officially disbanded in 2007, but volunteers continued to operate the food ministry, which became known as Park View Community Mission. A pantry was introduced, known as Food for Families. It is now Lynchburg’s largest, and the largest client-choice pantry in the state west of Richmond. In 2017 the Mission received tax-exempt status by the IRS and became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with the goal of helping our neighbors lift themselves out of poverty.
To do this, a Community Resource Center was opened and classroom space was utilized to begin teaching basic nutrition and homemaking skills. The problem of hunger among students was recognized, and the Food for Thought weekend backpack program was launched in 2018. Additional courses were brought under a program called the Life Skills Institute in 2019. That was also the year clothing distribution received a new focus. A few racks of free clothing had been a part of the pantry, but increased demand and a generous supply of donations meant relocating to a larger space and giving it a new name, the Clothing Connection.
Today, Park View’s six programs continue to focus on offering help, healing, and hope, thanks to committed volunteers and supporters.

Rush Homes
Rush Homes embraces the many meanings of home through development of housing for people with both disabilities and low incomes. Housing instability is a reality for many area families, especially families with disabilities, struggling with declining incomes, increasing rents and a shortage of affordable homes. Locally, 5,000 families are headed by a person with a disability, most with low income. This financial strain leads to poor physical and mental health, eviction, and homelessness. When Rush Homes provides affordable and accessible housing, their tenant families become more stable.
As a non-profit, 501(c)3 organization, Rush Homes also offers residential support to help our tenant families improve their lives and avoid eviction. Our program helps our tenant families improve their social connections and life skills, leading to a better quality of life. As we all know, living in homes that meet our needs, including social needs, leads to positive benefits for all of us.
Rush Homes provides a boost to the local economy because our tenant families pay affordable rents and have more money to spend in the community. In addition, Rush Homes is an economic engine, generating over $41 million through housing development and property management since 2010.
Rush Homes is a Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development and City of Lynchburg certified Community Housing Development Organization. We are also a Virginia Housing (formerly Virginia Housing Development Authority) Certified Property Manager. All Rush Homes multi-family housing developments are EarthCraft Certified which means they are highly energy efficient, have better indoor air quality, and are more durable. Energy efficiency saves tenant families money by lowering their utility bills.

The YWCA of Central Virginia
YWCA Central Virginia is dedicated to eliminating racism, empowering women, and promoting peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all.
Founded in 1912 by a dedicated group of women, who had incidentally been told that creating an organization for women and by women would never work, YWCA Central Virginia has grown and adapted to meet the varying needs of the communities we serve. Today, YWCA Central Virginia serves the women, children, and families of Central Virginia — and area that includes the city of Lynchburg and seven surrounding counties — which includes 4,400 square miles and 400,000+ community members.
Every 7 days a child dies from abuse or neglect. Every 5 hours a child witnesses an act of domestic violence. In an average moment, there are 6,700 children in foster care in Virginia. The Domestic Violence Prevention Program (DVPP) helps women, children, men and families recover from abuse, resolve personal conflicts, improve self-esteem and begin new lives. The primary feature of this program is our two VSDVAA-certified shelters. The shelters are located in a private, secure and confidential places in both the City of Lynchburg and the Town of Altavista. The YWCA Domestic Violence Prevention Program is accessible 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
